- Swimming clothes
- Two towels
- Sports clothes and sports shoes
- Comfortable shoes and some old shoes that can get wet and dirty

At the airport
The student's complete flight details must be sent to us as soon as possible, if they haven't already been sent.
If the student is booked with the airline as an unaccompanied minor, it is VERY IMPORTANT to inform us in advance.
Students will be met at the airport by a Kings guide or Kings representative. Students should look for a sign which says Kings Young Learners.
Please note that the Kings guide or Kings representative may not be at the arrivals area until 45 minutes after the flight arrival time.
If a student cannot find the Kings guide or appointed Driver, the student should go to the Airport Information Desk and show the staff a copy of their Kings Transfer Confirmation Letter. At Heathrow students should look for a Passenger Ambassador (people wearing purple jackets).
In this situation, it is important not to panic and remain within the terminal building. Airports are big and busy, but Kings has been collecting students for many years. We will look after them!
We advise all students to travel with the following documents:
- Passport (with Visa if required)
- Letter of Consent to Travel (to be completed by parents)
- Booking confirmation letter

At college
During the course, the Experience Bournemouth programme will normally be run in two shifts. This means, for example, that the students could have lessons in the mornings or afternoon. Activities take place in the opposite time of the day. Students will have 15 hours of tuition per week. Each lesson last 60 minutes. Kings only employ qualified native and non-native teachers.
Welcome, orientation, testing and progress
Students should come to college by 08.30 on their first Monday morning.
Students may be temperature tested on arrival at the school and the use of face coverings may be necessary in our communal areas.
On their first official day of programme (Monday), students will be tested to assess their starting level and allow us to adequately divide them in classes.
Students will also receive a welcome talk, orientation, a tour of the college and a walking tour of Bournemouth. During the welcome talk they will receive a welcome pack, their timetables and a map.
The test consists of a written part with 60 multiple choice questions, a short written presentation and a speaking part. The result of both parts will determine the final score.
After having been assigned to their level and class, students will have a mix of language input and practice (grammar, vocabulary and skills) and lessons based around areas such as culture, project work and excursions, as outlined in the sample timetable.
Students are placed firstly by their age - we attempt to put no more than a 3 year age range in each class, then by test result, and finally we try to mix nationalities as much as possible into each class.
Student performance will be continually assessed and, when progress is observed, students will be given the possibility to go to a higher level. Kings offers a maximum of 6 different levels, thus ensuring student individual academic needs are met. If a student misses a lesson due to sickness, made up lessons will not be provided.
At the end of their course, providing they have attended 90% of their lessons, students will receive and end-of-course certificate stating the duration of their course, the hours of lessons they attended and their level.
Students will also receive a student report with more specific scores and comments on their overall progress, participation and effort as well as their writing, speaking, listening and reading skills, signed by their teacher and the centre's Director of Studies.
Attendance rules
90% attendance = CERTIFICATE
Less than 90% = NO CERTIFICATE!
If a student is absent for any reason, they must inform the Course Coordinator.
Punctuality
Students must be on time for their lessons and activities. If they are late, they will be marked absent.
Mobile phones
Please ensure students switch mobile phones OFF or to SILENT before coming into class.
Students must not make or receive calls in class, and must not send text messages. If they do not obey this rule, their teacher may take their phone away. If a student is expecting an important phone call, they must speak to their teacher before the lesson.
At home with a British family
General Homestay rules and advice
- If students are over 16, their Host Family will give them a key, which they must look after carefully.
- The Host Family must be given the student's mobile phone number for use in emergencies.
- If a student goes out in the evenings, they must always tell their Host Family where they are going and approximately what time they will be back home.
- If students are aged 14–15, they are allowed to go out unsupervised but MUST be home each night at 21.30 unless with their group leader.
- If students are aged 16–17, they are advised to return home by 22.30 each night. If they consistently stay out later than this advised time, a curfew will be set and their parents/agents will be informed.
- The Host Family will want the student to feel part of the family, but students should not forget that they are a guest in their home.
- Students should talk to their Host Family — this is the best way to improve their English.
- House rules and meal times must be respected. If a student thinks they will be late for a meal, or wants to stay out late, they must let their Host Family know.
- Students should always be polite and friendly.
- The student should ask their Host Family before inviting friends to visit.
- They shouldn't be nervous about asking for the Host Family's help.

Looking after your bedroom
The Host Family will clean the student's room and wash their bed sheets, but the student must keep their bedroom tidy and make the bed each morning.
Students must not put up posters in their room. It can damage the paint/wallpaper.
They should be careful with nail varnish, shoe polish and anything that could stain. If a student breaks or damages anything, they must tell their Host Family and expect to pay for a repair!
The bedroom light should not be kept on all night, as it wastes electricity.
If the student feels cold, they can ask their Host Family for another blanket.
In the bathroom
Most homes will have a bathroom that they share with all members of the household. Students can take a daily bath or shower, but should think of the other members of the family, making sure they leave the bathroom clean and tidy after they have used it.
Students must provide their own toiletries, such as shampoo and soap.
If they are not sure how the shower works, for example, students should ask the Host Family to explain.
Laundry
An optional laundry service (once per week) is included in the cost for all students. Dry cleaning and special treatments for delicate clothes are not available.
All clothing must be labelled with the student's name.
Please note: Kings shall not be liable for student property that is damaged or lost during the laundry process. Student clothing is laundered by Kings at the students' own risk.

Health and safety
Transport and safety
Students booking the Experience Bournemouth programme receive a
weekly bus pass.
Students will need to download the "More Buses" App and create an account prior to arrival.
The voucher to redeem their bus pass will be communicated on arrival.
Guidance on how to create an account can be found here.
If you have problems downloading or creating the account, please do
contact us prior to arrival.
The student's Host Family, Residence Manager or Social Monitors will show or explain to them how to get to the bus stop.
The student should write down the location and name of the bus stop nearest their Host Family or Residence and write down the bus numbers to and from college. We have bus maps available at reception.
Students must be careful when getting off the bus! They should wait on the pavement until the road is clear and not cross the road in front of the bus.
They should always cross main roads at a pedestrian crossing and wait for the green light! On other roads: Look right, look left, and look right again. When they are sure the road is clear, they can cross — walking across the road, not running!
REMEMBER! In England the cars drive on the left side of the road.
A student should not walk alone at night: they should walk with friends or share a taxi to get home.
Students must always carry their student card.
Going out in Bournemouth
If students are aged 14–15, they must be back at the Homestay or Residence each night at 21.30 unless with their group leader.
If students are aged 16–17, they should be home each night by 22.30.
If a student consistently stays out later than the advised time, a curfew will be set and their parents/agents will be informed.
Students must tell their Host Family or Residence Manager where they are going and when they will be coming back.
If a student plans to go out for a meal with their friends, they must tell their Host Family the day before, so that they don't prepare a meal.
If students are under 18, they are not allowed to leave the Bournemouth area unless their Host Family, Kings Representative or a Group Leader accompanies them. If their parents have given them permission to leave the Bournemouth area, this must be put in writing and handed to the college on arrival.
Illness and medical treatment
Before arrival
Details of any on-going illness or medical condition and its treatment (including medication) should be entered on the enrolment form at booking stage. We also ask for any information which may effect the student's mental health on this form.
After arrival
Students should also bring a note with details of their illness with them including their medication and pass this detail on to Centre Management.
Students will receive information on their first day so they know who to go to if they feel ill. This information will also be put up on notice boards around the campus.
If an illness/accident occurs :
Minor illnesses
Students are monitored by staff (there is at least one qualified first aider on the team). The National Health Service 24-hour support telephone number may be called for advice, or we may take a student to a local pharmacy.
More serious illnesses
We will arrange for the student to visit the doctor. If a student has an accident or is seriously ill, we will arrange for them to go to hospital.
IMPORTANT
Coming to the UK: Students from Europe should bring an up-to-date EHIC card to ensure that they receive free medical treatment (there will be a charge for medicines).
All students should ensure that they have adequate medical/ travel insurance. This can be booked through Kings if you wish.
Child safeguarding
We have Welfare Managers in each centre, to ensure that students have someone to look after them and listen to them if they have any questions or need advice or support at any time. Individual students are assigned a 'guardian' on arrival at centre who will meet with a group of individuals daily to ensure they are aware of the programme details and to listen to any issues
Our Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy can be viewed here.
Fire safety
All students will receive instruction, within 24 hours of arrival, on what do if a fire alarm sounds, and there will be regular fire drills during their stay. Should the fire alarm sound, students always need to evacuate and meet at the pre-arranged meeting point.
It is an offence to set off a fire alarm for no reason, or to play with fire safety equipment. Anyone found doing so will be liable to pay a fine and may also be asked to leave the school.
Visiting students
If a parent or family member wishes to visit a student on campus, or temporarily remove a student from the programme, they must inform the school at least 24 hours in advance and complete documentation required.
We are unable to release students to anybody, including family members, without previous communication.
